BOOKS FOR AFRICA PARTNERS WITH IMBAKO PUBLIC HEALTH; JOINING HANDS TO LIGHT THE EDUCATIONAL PATH FOR COMMUNITIES IN RURAL KENYA.
Books for Africa , a US based NGO dedicated to helping end the book famine in Africa, has donated a 40-foot container of books to Imbako Public Health. Imbako was informed of the news and received the official letter of collaboration in November, 2010. The value of a 40-foot container of books by conservative IRS estimate exceeds $ 165,000. The books are being housed in a 40-foot container at a Smyrna, Ga., warehouse waiting on the non-profit organization Imbako Public Health to raise $8,000 in shipping costs.
The books to be received will be used to establish the Imbako Public Health Library, in Sitatunga, Kitale, and to supplement the reading material in the local high (secondary) and elementary (primary) schools in Kitale, Kenya. Mrs. Judith Okech, CEO, Imbako stated that the books will benefit, not only the children but also community members in the area. Debbie McDonald, Assistant Director, Books for Africa- Atlanta, was thrilled that they could make a positive difference to communities in Kenya.
This project has been recognized by the University Of South Carolina Arnold School Of Public Health as an example in addressing disparities in education in rural communities. http://sph.sc.edu/news/okech.htm
